Joi AI in 2026: who runs it, what Neurons cost, and how the Ofcom case ended

By The Best AI Girlfriend App Updated Desk research, 11 min read

Desk researchBuilt from public sources checked 3 November 2026. We have not tested these apps hands-on.

  • Run by Novi Limited, Nicosia, Cyprus
  • Ofcom case closed 31 July 2026, no findings
  • A video view costs up to 1,900 Neurons

TL;DR

Joi AI is run by Novi Limited of Cyprus. Its terms on Neurons, refunds and chargebacks, and how Ofcom's age-check case ended. Checked 2 November 2026.

Joi AI (joi.com) is a browser-based AI companion site for adults, run by Novi Limited, a company registered in Nicosia, Cyprus, that also publishes the EVA AI Soulmate app. Joi AI is a registered, operating business. Ofcom opened an age-check investigation into Novi on 15 January 2026 and closed it on 31 July 2026 without findings, after Novi added age assurance to joi.com. Joi AI hides its subscription prices until you sign up, but its terms of service, last updated 4 June 2026, set the Neuron costs: 4 Neurons to read a romantic message, up to 120 for a photo and up to 1,900 for a video.

This is a research overview. On 2 November 2026 we read Joi AI’s terms, privacy policy, refund policy, safety pages and public character pages, Ofcom’s case record and the US App Store, and we quote them with their dates. We have not paid for Joi AI, so this page has no score and no verdict on its chats. How we test explains what a paid test would add. Joi AI is for adults: its terms say the service is “strictly for adults 18+”.

Joi AI pays us nothing. The images and buttons on this page link to Candy AI, which does pay us a commission. Candy AI publishes its prices, and its terms allow a refund request within 24 hours of payment if you have used no more than 20 tokens.

Is Joi AI legit? The company behind joi.com

Yes, in the basic sense: a registered company runs Joi AI, and it publishes terms, a privacy policy, a refund policy and a named records custodian. Its privacy policy names the data controller as “NOVI LIMITED, reg. number HE 407352”, at Aglantzias 62 in Nicosia, Cyprus. The terms open by saying they “set out the terms on which Novi Limited provides services and govern your use of Joi AI”. Joi AI’s 2257 records statement names Artemis Stylianou, a director of Novi Limited, as custodian of records.

Two other names appear in Joi AI’s own documents:

  • The “Contact us” block at the end of the terms lists “Lanoto Solutions Inc., reg. number 6037405” at 173 Huguenot St, Suite 200, New Rochelle, NY 10801. The terms do not say what Lanoto Solutions does for Joi AI.
  • On Apple’s US App Store, the seller of EVA AI Soulmate is “Novi Limited”. Joi AI and EVA AI share an operator, and EVA’s US App Store listing shows its prices.

Joi AI’s public record on 2 November 2026:

  • Trustpilot: a TrustScore of 3.9 from 261 reviews on the joi.ai profile, with 14% of reviews at one star. The company claimed the profile in October 2026. The one- and two-star reviews from September and October 2026 mostly complain about unexpected charges and costly add-ons, then about image quality and characters that forget earlier chats.
  • Data breaches: Have I Been Pwned listed no breach for Joi AI, Novi Limited or EVA AI.
  • App stores: a search of Apple’s US App Store for “joi” returned no Joi AI app from Novi Limited. The Joi name is shared by unrelated apps, such as a wellness journal and a live video chat app, so check the seller name before you download anything called Joi.
  • Review sites: Joi AI runs an affiliate program, linked in its site footer. In our 2 November search, many “Joi AI review” results carried affiliate links, and several sat on university websites and .pages.dev addresses with near-identical text.

The Ofcom investigation into Joi AI, opened and closed in 2026

Ofcom, the UK online safety regulator, opened an investigation into Novi Ltd “in respect of the site joi.com” on 15 January 2026. The case asked two questions under the Online Safety Act 2023: whether joi.com had “highly effective age assurance” to keep children away from pornographic content (section 12), and whether Novi had carried out and recorded a children’s access assessment (section 36).

Ofcom closed the case on 31 July 2026. Its closing text says that “During our investigation, Novi Ltd implemented age assurance measures on Joi.com”, and that enforcement was no longer an administrative priority.

Ofcom case page closing text dated 31 July 2026, outlined: Ofcom closed its investigation without making any findings as to Novi Ltd's compliance with its duties under the Online Safety Act

Ofcom made no finding either way on Novi’s compliance, and it says it may revisit the decision if new concerns arise, “including in relation to the effectiveness of the age assurance measures deployed on Joi.com”. Joi AI’s terms, section 6.1, describe “age confirmation” and, where the law or card networks require it, a “third-party age-assurance provider”.

What Joi AI costs: hidden plans and Neurons

Joi AI does not show subscription prices to logged-out visitors. The text in its page code names three Premium billing periods (“Monthly plan”, “Quarterly plan”, “Yearly plan”), a higher “Premium Plus” tier, an “Upgrade to Premium” button labelled “Get 75% OFF!”, and a promo button reading “PROMO: HELLO50” with an “UP TO 50% OFF” badge. Section 3.6 of the terms says Premium and Neuron prices “may vary based on region, length of subscription, selected Virtual friend … available promotions, and other factors”.

Neurons are Joi AI’s in-app currency, and the terms list what they buy. Section 3.4 says Neurons pay for services outside the subscription, including romantic messages and photo and video content. The costs per action are fixed in the terms; the dollar price of a Neuron is not.

What you pay forJoi AI’s own terms (4 June 2026)Dollar cost if a third-party price is right
Read one romantic message4 Neuronsabout $0.05
View one photoup to 120 Neuronsup to about $1.52
View one videoup to 1,900 Neuronsup to about $24.13
Premium subscription, monthlyprice shown only after sign-up“$17.77/month” (Unfinished Man, 10 March 2026); “$10 to $30 per month” (Georgia Straight, 12 October 2026)
Extra character (Bot Subscription)an add-on that needs active Premium1,000 Neurons, “about $20” (Unfinished Man)

The dollar column is our arithmetic on one third-party claim, that 10,000 Neurons cost $126.99 (Unfinished Man, 10 March 2026). We could not verify that price on joi.com, and the two review sites disagree with each other on the monthly plan. On Joi AI’s own numbers, one video view at the top rate costs as many Neurons as 475 romantic messages.

Premium subscribers get a 10% discount on Neurons, per the Neuron screen text in Joi AI’s page code. A Bot Subscription, which adds one extra character, stops working if Premium lapses: section 3.3 says access is suspended and the suspension “does not entitle you to a refund”. Premium renews “automatically until canceled”, and the terms add, “You shall not claim refunds for any partial period of subscription.”

Who the Joi AI characters are, and what their listed ages show

Joi AI’s public pages list characters with a name, an age and a short bio. We counted every character card on 11 logged-out joi.com pages and in 15 logged-out searches on 2 November 2026: 203 characters in total. The youngest listed age is 19, and no character is listed under 18. Joi AI’s age filter starts at an “18-21” bracket.

Bar chart of listed ages of 203 public Joi AI characters on 2 November 2026: 20 aged 18 to 21, 70 aged 22 to 26, 64 aged 27 to 35, 32 aged 36 to 45, 9 aged 46 to 55, 8 aged 56 and over; youngest listed age 19
Listed ages of public Joi AI characters, grouped by Joi's own age filter. Source: character cards on joi.com, read 2 November 2026. Count and chart by thebestaigirlfriendapp.com.

Most public characters, 134 of 203, are listed between 22 and 35. Section 6.2 of the terms says “All AI personas made available on the platform are specified and reviewed as adults”. Logged-out visitors can filter by “Joi Originals” and “Celebrities”. Joi AI also has community-made characters, but the logged-out filter does not show them, and we did not sign up, so this count does not cover them.

The “Celebrities” filter covers what Joi AI’s About page calls “official digital duplicates of real celebrities”. Ordinary users cannot upload photos to build a character: section 5.1 says “Regular users are strictly prohibited from uploading content to the Platform”, and only verified creators may add adult content.

Joi AI voice chat and video calls: what Joi publishes

Joi AI’s terms say you can talk to a character “via text, voice, and (where available) the Video Call Feature”. The terms define that feature as a “real-time audio and video interface” with the character. On 3 November 2026 the logged-out joi.com page code held a “Video call” button and the prompt “Tap here to start a video call”.

Joi AI publishes no voice price. On 3 November 2026 we read the terms, the refund policy, all 15 articles in Joi’s help center and the logged-out page code. None of them gives a Neuron or dollar cost per voice message or per call minute, and none names the plan that includes voice. Section 3.4 of the terms prices three actions only: 4 Neurons to read a romantic message, up to 120 for a photo and up to 1,900 for a video. Joi’s own pages also do not say whether a free account gets voice.

The one plan rule Joi publishes is in section 1.6 of the terms:

Joi AI terms of service section 1.6, outlined: Video Call Feature may require camera and microphone permissions, availability may vary by device, region, and plan, and the feature may be modified, suspended, or discontinued at any time
Section 1.6 of Joi AI's terms of service (highlight ours). Source: joi.com/terms, last updated 4 June 2026. Captured by us on 3 November 2026.

Joi’s help center says subscription benefits “reset every month” and that leftover quota rolls over, but it does not list the benefits. Its article whose web address reads “what’s included in premium” opens a page about free Neurons instead. Ask support@joi.com in writing what voice quota your plan includes before you pay for it.

Two rules apply to what you send. Section 5.6 treats your audio and video on a call as content under the terms’ content rules. It also says you “must not record, capture, livestream, publish, or redistribute” any part of a call, unless the service offers that.

Joi AI’s privacy policy, last updated 30 October 2026, covers voice in four places:

  • It lists “voice recording” as private content you share “in chat or calls”, used to reply to you and for “content moderation”.
  • It uses text and voice messages “to develop its AI”.
  • For both uses it says Joi “may use external services”, for hosting or analysing the data.
  • It names no retention period for recordings. Data is “kept for the time necessary to provide the services”, and you can ask support to delete it. The opt-outs the policy lists cover profiling and targeted advertising, not AI training.

What Joi AI does with your chats

Joi AI’s privacy policy, last updated 30 October 2026, says it uses text and voice messages “To improve the quality of text and voice messages of the virtual friend(s) and to develop its AI”. Read plainly, that lets Joi AI use your chats to develop its models. The policy also lists facts about your life, people you mention in chat and images you send as data it collects, and says images may go to “external services, e.g., for object recognition in photos”.

Other privacy points from the same policy:

  • “We neither rent nor sell your information to anybody.”
  • Session recordings of your clicks go to Microsoft only “Upon your in-app consent” at registration.
  • Data is “kept for the time necessary to provide the services”. The policy names no period in days or years.
  • You can delete your profile on the website or ask support to delete your data. The terms, section 4.1, call account deletion “irreversible”.

Our privacy comparison of companion apps shows how other apps word training and retention.

Cancelling Joi AI, refunds and the chargeback clause

You cancel Joi AI in Settings, then My Subscriptions, then the subscription you want to stop. Joi AI’s refund policy, last updated March 2025, says the cancellation takes effect “from the next subscription month”. Fees already charged and Neurons for the current month, used or not, are not refunded.

Joi AI allows a money refund only in three cases, requested within 14 days of purchase:

  1. Proven fraudulent use of your card.
  2. A one-time erroneous Neuron purchase: a full refund if the Neurons are unspent, a partial refund if some are spent.
  3. Joi AI ends your subscription itself, for any reason other than a rule breach or your own request. The refund is then pro rata.

Requests go to support@joi.ai, and the policy promises an initial reply “within 72 (seventy-two) hours”. A bank chargeback has its own clause.

Joi AI refund policy declaration, outlined: should you chargeback any transactions, Joi AI may be required to disclose any and all private communications sent or received through JOI AI to prove the charges

If you dispute a charge with your bank, Joi AI says it “may be required to disclose any and/or all private communications” to prove the charge, and that its privacy policy will not stop that. Try support@joi.ai first and keep a copy of the email.

The terms send disputes to arbitration. US residents must try 60 days of informal resolution, then binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association in New York City, with a small-claims option up to US $5,000. The terms waive class actions and jury trials. Users outside the US go to LCIA arbitration, and Cyprus law governs the terms.

Joi AI next to two apps that publish their prices

Joi AI’s main gap is price transparency. Candy AI and Nomi both show their plan prices before you pay. Candy AI pays us a commission; Nomi pays us nothing.

Before you sign up for Joi AI

If you try Joi AI, sign up at joi.com itself, since the Joi name is shared by unrelated apps. Before you pay, write down the price your checkout shows, because the terms let prices change by region and promotion. Set a monthly Neuron budget, since a video view can cost up to 1,900 Neurons. Cancel at least a day before renewal in Settings, then My Subscriptions. Email support@joi.ai about any wrong charge before you go to your bank.
